Semana Santa, or Holy Week, is a Christian celebration which takes place during the final week of Lent leading up to Easter Sunday. There may be no city in the Americas that has as renowned a Semana Santa celebration as Antigua Guatemala. During this magical week the city is flooded with people from all over the country and visitors from all over the world. The days are filled with crowded processions that advance through the city. The processions consist of big floats that support statues of Jesus Christ and the Virgen Mary, accompanied by marching bands, and throngs of purple-robed men, many of whom carry the floats. Processions are also held every Sunday during Lent to build up anticipation for the week long festival of Samana Santa.
Some of the most alluring attractions during Semana Santa are the beautiful and vibrant alfombras, which are designs made from color-dyed sawdust and skillfully placed on the streets to resemble carpets. These alfombras are placed directly in the path of the processions that inevitably stampede over and leave them in tatters. It is definitely a beautiful time to be in Antigua and an unforgettable week for all who attend.
